MEXICO, 1981, the 250th anniversary of his birth, Scott 1243 with its FDI cancelBorn in Veracruz, Clavijero, like Velasco in Ecuador, taught in America, but after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 took refuge in Italy and wrote his Ancient History of Mexico with material he had gathered in the New World. His writings contributed to a literature of exiles and to a more respectful view of the peoples of the Americas. The Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero at Xalapa near Veracruz is named in his honor. More
