Aurelio Espinosa Pólit, born in Quito, was forced to leave Ecuador as a child, and after graduating from the Jesuit college in Namur joined the Society of Jesus and continued his studies in Granada, Barcelona, and Cambridge. He returned to Ecuador in 1928, and founded what is now called the Aurelio Espinoza Pólit Museum and Library, a treasure house of information about Ecuador, and also the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) of which he was first president. He wrote, translated or edited more than 600 works, among them the Modern History of the Kingdom of Quito and the Chronicles of the Jesuit Province of the same Kingdom by Juan de Velasco, SJ.
