Fr. Jules Torrend, SJ and the Kasisi church, Scott 1064

Fr. Jules Torrend, SJ did philosophy and regency with Fr. Joseph Moreau, SJ in South Africa in the 1880s. After working in Mozambique, Torrend came to Zimbabwe, and at first accompanied Moreau to the Chikuni mission. But he quickly moved on to establish the Kasisi mission (the word means priest) on the Ngwerere river near the present-day Lusaka International Airport. Besides his pastoral ministry, Torrend, a linguistic genius, published several dictionaries and grammars of local languages. In 1910 Torrend and other Jesuits were expelled from the country, to be replaced later by Polish Jesuits, but he returned to die in Chikuni in 1936.
