The Jesuits founded this school in 1895 and dedicated it to the Jesuit, Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. They ran the school from then until it was nationalized by the government of Sri Lanka in 1971.

St. Joseph's College, Trincomalee

Scott 1093
SRI LANKA , 1994, the 125th anniversary of St. Joseph's College at Trincomalee, Scott 1093

St. Joseph's College was founded by the Oblates (OMI's) in 1867 (so the college contends despite the dates on the stamp) but was put into the care of the Jesuits in 1901. The first Jesuit principal was Fr. Charles Bonnel, brother of Fr. Ferdinand Bonnel, SJ, the founder of St. Michael's College also in Sri Lanka. Seventy years later, circumstances forced the Jesuits to yield control of the school to the government. At present the principal is once again an Oblate, so the school seems to have come full circle.
