Vatican Radio is a Jesuit-run rather than a Jesuit-owned institution. On February 12, 1931 the first broadcast of Vatican Radio took place. The Director General of Communications for Vatican City, Jesuit Father Giuseppe Gianfranceschi, had been planning a Vatican radio station for six years and had brought in Marconi himself to help bring it about. Gianfranceschi became the first director general, and the Jesuits have operated the station ever since.
