VENEZUELA, 1974, Pay Your Taxes issue, Scott 1066-69

The first four stamps of this issue picture a young girl studying beneath a caption, Paga tus impuestos (Pay your taxes) and beside another, Más escuelas (More schools) suggesting that the building in the background is a new school paid for with tax money. But it is in fact the San Javier del Valle Retreat House in Mérida, built by Fr. José María Vélaz, SJ, founder of Fe y Alegría, in memory of 27 Jesuit high school students who died in a plane crash. The house was dedicated on February 15, 1954.
